Raised by a single mother and activist in South Africa in the final two decades of Apartheid, I was lulled to sleep by protest songs instead of lullabies. For outings, we attended peaceful protests where I learned that people, united, could attract attention globally and affect change locally. As a preteen, I wrote letters to the editor of the local newspaper and learned firsthand the power of my pen and my voice. My opportunity to travel and be educated at Stanford University changed my trajectory forever.
